By in Political Leaders

By Aisha Raheel, Wagner College ’16 President Gamal Abdul Nasser was a ruler like no other in Egyptian history. He was the son of a postal clerk and had no roots in the Egyptian upper class (Time, 1970). He seized power in a military coup but became a very popular ruler during his reign, remembered with nostalgia after his death. He tried to improve the lives of ordinary Egyptians through land reform and public education (Migdal, 1988; Ahmed, 1992). Yet Nasser’s greatest legacy was attempts at preserving Egypt’s independence and promoting Third World independence more generally. His greatest triumph was the nationalization of the Suez Canal. In addition, he also tried to promote Arab unity through his union with Syria. The attempt at a political union among Arab states was a failure but the Arabs united as one people with a shared language and culture was popular among ordinary...

“The Father of Black History”   By Rashon Pleasants, Wagner College’16”   Quote: “If you can control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do. If you make a man feel that he is inferior, you do not have to compel him to accept an inferior status, for he will seek it himself. If you make a man think that he is justly an outcast, you do not have to order him to the back door. He will go without being told; and if there is no back door, his very nature will demand one.”   Thesis- The pride of Black History, and contributions African-Americans made in America studied and emphasized by Carter G. Woodson.   Accomplishments- • In 1915 Woodson began the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. • In 1926,...

“Margaret Thatcher: A leader, a legislator, a lady” By: Stefanie Angeli, Wagner College’16”   “Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s a day you’ve had everything to do and you’ve done it.”   This inspirational piece of wisdom comes from none other than “The Iron Lady”, Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher spoke these words but also lived by them. Elected to Parliament at a young age, Margaret Thatcher became the first female leader of a political party in Britain in February 1975 and became its first female British Prime Minister in May 1979 (Garnett, 2007).
