Oxfam Hunger Banquet

Yesterday, my LC and I attended the Oxfam Hunger Banquet. Attending this Banquet I did not know what to expect really. When we first entered, we were handed a card and were seated randomly. The people that were told to sit on the floor were the low-income families, and the middle class and the upper class were seated at tables. This banquet was held to raise awareness of world hunger and bring it to perspective.

I liked how this banquet was almost a week after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day to be thankful for everything we have because on an everyday basis we are too busy to even stop and think for a moment. Yesterday, attending this banquet really brought world hunger to perspective for me. During the discussion, the speakers told us how every 11 seconds a child dies in the world because of malnourishment is heartbreaking. I am grateful to be born in a middle-class family where I am not deprived of food, but there are children out there that are fortunate enough. We do not choose what class we are born into, unfortunately.

Towards the end of this banquet the low incomce families were asked to stand and get food, their food was rice and beans. This is what a low-income family was able to afford to eat. The middle class family was then asked to stand, and they were served plain pasta with a piece of bread. The upper-class family was then served chicken. This is what these family’s ate on a daily basis. It is extremely sad, and it is amazing how this Oxfam banquet tries to raise awareness.

Oxfam Hunger Banquet

Last night, I joined my classmates by participating in the Oxfam Hunger Banquet. I had an idea of what it was since I had looked up information about it before the banquet, however I was interested to learn more about it. We were each given a card that gave us a backstory of who we were and informed us of our income level.  I had been given a backstory of someone who was considered to be low-income. The income level determined where we sat and what we ate for the night. Since I was considered to be low income, I was directed to sit on the floor instead of the chairs like those who pic
ked out a card in a medium or high income level. For dinner, my group had been given rice and beans to eat in a paper cup with a spoon, while the group who received the medium income had plain pasta, water, a bread roll, plates and silverware. The few people in the high income group had better silverware and glassware along with better nutritious meal options such as salads, bread rolls, and chicken.

IMG_8598During this banquet, I realized that there was no control over who received what card. It’s the same in real life. You can’t help what you are born into. Those in the lower class had no choice in anything due to circumstances out of their control. This banquet made me realize the amount of difficulty there is simply to acquire food and even then, sometimes it isn’t enough. It made me realize my comfort and the fact that I never had to deal with poverty. Not everyone has that comfort and it has made me appreciate this banquet by bringing to light an issue many of us don’t consider an issue, simply because we aren’t dealing with it ourselves.

Oxfam Hunger Banquet

Going to the banquet yesterday it really opened my eyes to see how other people live. When I walked in I was given a card that showed me were I was to sit. I saw that people were being put into different areas of the room. Some people were sitting at nice tables with chairs and some were places on the floor.  I was with the low income population so I had to sit on the floor. My card told me that I was a 40 year old women who worked on a farm in Haiti. There was an area with middle class  families and hight class families. Everyone had a different background story for why they were in their specific class.

At the end when we got to eat it wasn’t what I was expecting it to be. Those of the high income class got to have wine, salad and chicken. The middle income class got to eat pasta with a little bit of butter, a piece of bread and water. And the Low income class, which was me, only had rice and beans, not even a drink of water. This was really eye opening to see that this is actually how people today live. Not everyone can get full course meals or even a drink of water. It showed me to stop taking what I have for granted and to really look at what I have in life because not everyones life is that great, some people don’t even get enough food to feed themselves let alone their families.

Thanksgiving

One holiday my whole family likes is Thanksgiving. Every year we go to my grandmas house where my mom, two aunts, and my grandma cook everything starting from the preparation from the night before. My grandma’s favorite thing to make on Thanksgiving is the turkey; she loves turkey so every year she buys and cooks the biggest turkey she can find. This year she cooked a 30-pound turkey and by the end of the day more than half of it was gone. My favorite dish that she makes is lasagna; her lasagna is the best! Most of my family members can not wait to eat her lasagna on holidays she even makes an extra tray for everyone to take home. When she makes her lasagna she uses the tomato sauce we made over the summer and her homemade mozzarella.

IMG_1263My family does not only just make lasagna and turkey on Thanksgiving it is much more than that. There are four courses that my family prepares for just about every holiday. The first course my grandma calls the antipasto that is peppers, hard boiled eggs, different kinds of cheeses, different types of dry sausage and my favorite little pieces of pizza that she made and cut up tiny. The second course is the lasagna, but everyone has to be careful with this dish because if they eat too much they will not be able to eat anything else. The third course is the turkey, but along with the turkey is sweet and regular potatoes, broccoli rabe, corn, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. Finally last but not least dessert, which is everyone’s favorite part of the day. My grandma makes butter cookies, some filled with jelly and some covered n walnuts and what I love the most that she made this year was her homemade seven layer cookies. This year one of my aunts made brownies, my other aunt made cream puffs, and my mom made a homemade vanilla cake from scratch that is to die for!

Salt Intake in NYC

salt emblem

The emblem that will soon become common on restaurant menus.

Starting today, New York City has a new rule regarding nutritional warnings in chain restaurants. The article viewed here explained that restaurants “will require a salt-shaker emblem on some sandwiches, salads and other menu items that top the recommended daily limit of 2,300 milligrams — about a teaspoon — of sodium.” Many people disagree, especially “salt producers and restaurateurs.” I personally find this to be a great idea. I used to consume excessive amounts of salt when I was younger and it was only after I was given the warning that I was going to have to deal with hypertension that I stopped completely and now only take a minimum amount of salt with most of my meals. This idea of an emblem being placed on menus is a great way to let me know what foods I should avoid. However, this rule doesn’t mean that it will be effective to everybody. Majority may choose to ignore the warning label and consume that meal. Regardless, I agree with the article when it states that people do need to be informed. As long as people understand that their intake of salt is excessive, it may lead them to be more cautious about their meal choices.

Chia Seeds

I have been eating chia seeds for a couple of years now and thought it would be interesting to evaluate some of the chia seed’s marketing claims. The media claims that chia seeds have a ton of health benefits such as being high in omega-3, antioxidants, and fiber. The high fiber content in chia makes them very satiating and supposedly keep you full longer.

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 12.01.12 AMLast year for breakfast I used to eat one of these bars every morning. I just ate them as a quick breakfast, not specifically because of the chia seeds in them, but simply because I liked them. Now thinking back on it, the bars I was consuming have both chia seeds and dark chocolate in them. I have realized that the brand Kashi, a brand marketed as healthy and organic, was using one of the most useful marketing strategies: including two “super foods” in their bars: dark chocolate and chia seeds. At first when I used to eat these bars, I enjoyed the taste and didn’t even notice there were chia seeds in them. However, after a couple of times of eating them, I actually noticed the chia seeds. To me, they are almost completely tasteless in the bars, but their consistency is what got to me. I do not mind it but, to me, chia seeds have this sort of slimy like outer coating on the seed which is kind of a weird feeling in your mouth.

After eating them, I do not recall being especially satiated or less hungry throughout the day; however, they did hold me over for a couple of hours until lunch time. After researching the actual health benefits of chia seeds, I have learned that the benefits are actually unclear and further scientific research must be done in order for me to form an accurate opinion of the seed. The research I did find did reveal that they were satiating; however, they had no weight loss properties. Even though these bars are definitely not going to help me lose weight, or even be a healthy breakfast for me, I will still consume them in moderation if I am in the mood for something sweet.

Manhattan Street and To-Go Eats

ThrouIMG_1467ghout the semester, I’ve been traveling to the different boroughs of New York City and trying many different foods on the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn. My first trip I went to a street fair near Grand Central Station and tried various ethnic foods such as German sausage, Greek Grape leaf wraps, a chicken kebab, and French crepe. It was very interesting to try many different foods from all over the world in such a small setting,

On my second trip into the city I went to Central Park and decided to go to a very well know street food cart just outside of the park
the vendor is called Waffles & Dingus and is a social media sensation.IMG_1906

IMG_1463When I was in California I ate a lot of Acai bowls. When coming to the New York I didn’t expect to find any because I figured it was more a West Coast thing. However, through a friend I ended up finding one. On my trip into the city I went to Juice Generation, a healthy to-go juice bar and smoothie bowl joint and had a peanut butter Acai Bowl. Acai is a superfood and smoothie bowls are extremely healthy and a very fulfilling meal.

Oxfam Hunger Banquet

Tonight LC 13 and I attended the Oxfam Hunger Banquet in the Wagner College Faculty Dining Hall. Walking in, I had no idea what kind of “banquet” this was going to be. I understood it was to raise awareness for world hunger but that was about it and I could not understand how world hunger and a banquet where we were going to be fed was going to be intertwined. To my surprise, as I walked in I was given a green piece of paper and was directed to sit at a table that was set with wine glasses, silverware, dishes and bread and butter (As shown in the photo below). To me, it was like a place setting at a fancy restaurant. I was very confused. The confusion grew when I looked around and saw some students directed to sit on the floor and others at a regular, standard table with a white cloth.

During the lecture discussing the multitude of poverty and hunger within the world, I was shocked at the statistics of how many people live with chronic hunger and malnourishment. I was particularly shocked that every 11 and a half seconds a child dies because of malnourishment. I really began to be grateful for the middle-upper class family I was born into. The speakers used my classmates as examples to show the social mobility that is possible and I also realized that no one from the upper class, where I was sitting, was asked to step down to a lower class table.

I was intrigued at how each person had no control over where they sat at the banquet, it was completely random. This shows the way people are born into a social class and how there’s no control over what their social status will be. This lecture really opened my eyes to no matter how hard people even worked, like the factory workers or the pickers in the field, one day could change your whole life and social status just by one unexpected event like a natural disaster in the case of the plantations.

In the same way, the people of the lower class in poverty had almost no choice in the employment and education opportunities in their lives. The lower class had to take whatever job was given to them. In the case of Pablo, who stood up against the maltreatment, he was fired. This made me realized how difficult it is for anyone in the lower class to move up or make any change in their lives because of how limited they are. The speakers emphasized almost no children exceed 8th grade and barely any girls are even sent to school. This leaves even less opportunity to prosper. The Oxfam Hunger Banquet truly opened my eyes to the distinct social class differences and the extreme poverty still evident in the world today, whether we see it in our own neighborhoods or not.

Oxfam America Hunger Banquet

Tonight, I had the privilege to experience the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet. This interactive event demonstrates the poverty and hunger occuring in the world today. Their mission is to open participant’s eyes to the unequal distribution of food in the world. Participants are drawn a card that shows their economic stratus. The low income people of the world represent the majority of the world. While the upper class represents 20% the the world’s total population, consisting of mostly Americans.

I was given a card that placed me in the low income group during the banquet. I represented a woman named Adis from Ethiopia. I was placed in her shoes and was asked to sit on the floor with my fellow colleagues and eat a small meal consisting of bland rice and beans in a cup. I, Adis, struggle to provide my seven children with adequate meals and  go to sleep with an empty stomach. I have nothing left to sell to buy food and have no IMG_8603money. As I look to my right,  the middle class were seated at a table and given pasta and water. To the far end of the room, the upper class were given a nutritious meal consisting of chicken and salad. My meal portrayed the difficult access to food and water in poor areas of the country.

The Oxfam America Hunger Banquet brought forward the reality of hunger in our world. I am fortunate to live in a home where I do not have to struggle to feed myself and have everything that I desire. This experience opened my eyes and made me realize that I am lucky because, most of the world does not have the life I have and I was able to have a small perspective of the struggles most of the world faces today.

Alabama

Two weeks ago, I went to Alabama for the weekend to visit my best friend who goes to the University of Alabama. On the plane I truly did not know what to expect when I got there. Were there going to be farms surrounding everything or would it be a little more civilized? I know it may sound a little harsh, but when someone thinks of Alabama what do they really expect. I saw the difference as soon as I entered the airport, especially when it came to cuisine. Of course there were many chains in the airport but there were many restaurants and places to eat at that I have never heard of before. The whole airport in general had such a different vibe and southern aesthetic to it. Leaving the airport we drove about 45 minutes on a highway that had nothing around it and didn’t seem much different than the New Jersey Turnpike or the Garden State Parkway. As soon as we got off the highway however, it didn’t seem real. There was about a mile long strip, possibly even longer, of fraternity houses lined up in a row. Across the street from this strip, was also a long strip of an ample variety of restaurants and drive through fast food places. The constructor definitely lucked out on this one. The placement of these food places couldn’t be better; they were situated in front of 20 houses filled with hundreds of guys who consume this food multiple times a day. These small businesses undoubtedly thrive and are very successful due to the placement of them. In addition to this strip, right next to the school was another strip of clothing stores, restaurants, and bars that consisted of many chains such as Moe’s and Starbucks but also included many authentic southern restaurants. The whole southern experience was definitely a bit of a culture shock for me, someone who grew up in NYC. Nonetheless, I would enjoy going back there to explore the town even more.
