Apple Picking

This weekend was fall break so I decided to go back home to New Jersey and spend a couple of days with my family. My family and I wanted to do something fun so we went apple picking to make apple crumb pie. As we pulled up to Battleview Orchards, the spot to pick apples, we saw a field full of all different kinds of apple trees. There was such a variety of apples including, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Braeburn, Pink Lady and more. In order to pick the apples, you needed to climb to the top of the tree. So there I go, climbing all the trees and throwing the apples down to the bottom so my brother could collect them in the bucket. We ended the day with twenty one apples, which was more than enough for the apple crumb pie.

In order to make apple crumb pie, you need five apples, cut and sliced into a bowl. My mom bought the pie crust already made so all we had to do was bake it for twelve minutes to brown it. The we mixed together in a bowl the apples, flour, sugar and cinnamon. Next we poured the apples in the bowl into the pie crust to then put in the oven to bake for 10 minutes at 425 degrees fahrenheit, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees fahrenheit for 45 minutes. We also added flour, sugar, cinnamon, butter and oats to sprinkle on the top as the crumb. Finally, we took out the finished apple crumb pie and ate it as a family. Every bite was warm and delicious, filled with so much flavor.

This event of apple picking connects to class because we discuss how fruits contain fructose. Many apples have been developed as dessert or cooking fruit or for making cider. In this case I had made a dessert which was apple crumb pie. I cut the apples up and added a spice to them which was cinnamon. I enjoyed making apple crumb pie and I look forward to making it again next year.

Food Cues

Over fall break I decided to go home to my hometown in Freehold, NJ. One of the main reasons why I enjoy going home so much is because of the incredible meals my mom makes. After spending a lot of time in traffic on the way home, I was very hungry. Thankfully, I walked into my house to a lovely meal of pasta with Bolognese sauce. This sauce has special ingredients in it that I will not share, but the basic ingredients include: carrots, celery, onion, garlic, a pinch of salt, fennel, tomato sauce, white wine, oil, and cheese. Its cooked on the stove for a few hours and then layered over al dente rigatoni pasta. After this, the sauce and pasta is put into a pan and a layer of mozzarella coats the Bolognese at a temperature of 375 degrees. To me, this sounds so incredibly appetizing. FullSizeRender

In psychology, we have been discussing things like food cue and hunger and it made me think that maybe I wasn’t hungry. Maybe I was just ready to eat something because it was that time of the day. The food cue that popped into my head was the time of day people eat. For me, the normal time of day to have dinner is around 6:00. It could vary for many people by hours or so, but the socially acceptable time in our society to eat dinner is around that time. Another cue that made me think I was hungry was the smell and sight of the meal. I know that this specific meal really clenches my taste buds and satisfies my appetite, but I did not have an appetite. This just shows that the presences of foods and food cues can really trigger an appetite even if it isn’t even there. We do not notice that food cues are the reason for us eating what, where and when we eat, but we do know that they’re what makes us eat. The idea of eating is engraved into our heads because of the social factors that take part in the idea of eating. Certain times, people, sights, smells and other factors make us want to eat and trigger an unwanted appetite.

Home Cooking

This weekend for fall break i got to go home for the first time in two months. The first thing i wanted when i got home was a home cooked meal of anything my parents have made before. Of course the weekend i go home so does my older brother which means he has the choice of what the meal is. Normally i hate what he picks because it is pork chops or something i was forced to eat as a child that i do not like now. Which we learned in psychology that being forced to eat something or being shunned form eating certain things and then when you’re older liking them and not liking them is common. This is common especially among sweets when children are not allowed to eat sweets as a child and when they get older they love sweets.

Back to my home cooked meal, my brother chose to have jambalaya. We used to eat this all the time when my dad would cook on the weekends so i have grown to like it very much. This time my dad added shrimp into the mix with the sausage and chicken. I actually enjoyed this version more than the other version. This could be from me getting older and my taste buds changing as i get older to like different things. As a child i did not like shrimp but now as a young adult it is one of my favorite foods to eat all different kinds of ways.

This home cooked meal and this trip home was exactly what i needed to relieve the stress from college.

Food Cues at Wagner

Before coming to Wagner, I was never personally a fan of any type of fried, processed, or unhealthy snack foods. However, every time I am hungry, I order an unhealthy meal at Hawks nest, and am always provoked by the cashier to get the combo (french fries and a drink). Why not get it if it is included? Once I am served french fries, I feel obligated to eat them because they are right in front of me, once I am given a cup, I walk over to the drink machine and get myself an iced tea or soda. This is a problem because if the waters served in Hawks did not use Flex Dollars, I would skip the soda machine all together; but, since a soda is included and not a water, I opt for the unhealthier, cheaper choice.

In the morning, seeing people walking around campus with their Starbucks cups makes me crave the taste of coffee. The fact that class is very early in the morning is a cue to my body falsely convincing me that I need caffeine to get through my day. When I am waiting on line, I hear everyone shouting out their bagel orders. This as well makes me crave something more to go along with my already unhealthy sugar filled coffee. Since we are allowed a certain amount of money for each swipe at Starbucks, I am even further provoked to get a bagel with my drink, because if i don’t use the money in my swipe now, I cannot eat again until lunch time.

After my 12:50 class ends, I feel as if I must get lunch because if I miss my lunch swipe, it does not carry over. The idea of a “swipe” leads me to eat more at certain times in the day because of my fear of “missing out on a meal (swipe).” I eat at times when I am not even hungry, and most of the time ending up eating very unhealthily, all because I don’t want to miss out on my lunch swipe.

Port Richmond Partnership

The Center for Civic Engagement recently held a Q & A Panel discussing their mission. By attending this session I received a different perspective of Port Richmond. The night began when we were first introduced to the panel and each individual shared their mission for the future of Port Richmond. Everyone was so passionate in creating change through leadership and community building.

One of the main aspects that i enjoyed during the night was when the history of Port Richmond was told. It was interesting to learn how the influx of immigrants made Port Richmond a prosperous location. This area was the center for commerce and immigration.  Over the years, Port Richmond has become a poor neighborhood, losing most of its capital. This area now houses the impoverished people living on Staten Island. I can’t believe how fast this drastic change took place.

I left this presentation with one piece of information that really struck me. The Staten Island community is almost as diversified as Manhattan. I couldn’t really believe it until the professor provided statistics. Living on Staten Island for many years, I have never realized how many cultures make up our neighborhoods. Some of these nationalities include Italian, Asian, Hispanic, African, Philippine, Polish, and many more which can be seen here. After this presentation, I am excited to be working with the Port Richmond Partnership. I hope that through peer mentoring, I will help others but also have learn from my mentee.

Adventuring to Port Richmond High School

Yesterday, LC 13 ventured outside the classroom to Port Richmond High School. We all received a walking tour of the culinary arts program. I couldn’t believe that the high school students are able to prepare meals together. The director of the program explained that the students learn about the meal they will be preparing on Monday. They start preparing and cooking the meal on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, each group is able to taste the meal they have been working so hard to make. This sounded so interesting I wish my high school had this kind of program.

After a tour of the various kitchens, we we taken to a little garden that is located outside at the end of the hall. I found it extraordinary that this program really takes a hand-on approach to teach students good eating habits. Port Richmond High School is investing in this program so students could take what they learned in class and apply it to everyday life. The teachers focus on teaching recipes that are easy to make, yet good for you.FullSizeRender

When the bell rang for the next classes, Genesis and I decided to mentor together. I was  finally going able to meet my mentee. Rebecca is a sophomore at Port Richmond High School and she hopes to go to culinary school after graduating. I realized how this program has influenced her decision to pursue a culiarycareer. Over the next few weeks, I hope to build a friendly relationship with Rebecca and learn more about her. This experience will be very rewarding.

My Port Richmond Experience

On October 8th, a beautiful Thursday morning my class and I ventured into Port Richmond. For our experiential learning in our LC’s, our class is going to take on the task of being suitable mentors for the students in Port Richmond High School. More specifically, the students a part of the schools’ culinary program. I remember first walking into the classroom and thinking, “Oh god, how am I going to mentor someone and help them out when I was in their position merely a few years ago!?” I was nervous but, at the same time excited. I enjoy helping other people out in whatever way I can. I get a sense of satisfaction from simply being able to put a smile on someone else’s face. Thus, when we first walked into the room to meet our mentees, it appeared to me that both classes just awkwardly stood their for a while just looking at each others apprehensive facial expressions. Then one teacher called out “Okay guys just introduce yourselves to someone and make friends.” With that said, everyone began to socialize with one another. I, still confused and nervous, just stood their for a few moments just thinking who am I going to mentor? Then, with some encouragement from my friend, went up to a girl in front of me to simply get to know her. Her name was Rebecca. Rebecca and I instantly clicked. She was a sweet, enthusiastic, and funny girl with a strong passion for cooking and baking. We spoke about all the foods she’s made as well as her experiences in the culinary class. We even shared a few laughs about my lack of cooking skills. By the end of the class, a friend from my class needed a mentee and decided to join Rebecca and I. Now that the three of us have been placed together for the rest of the semester, we will get the opportunity to get to know each other, learn from each other and grow from each others experiences. I’m excited to see what this mentor-mentee relationship will bring about for I have truly enjoyed my trip to Port Richmond High School. 🙂

The Definition of Beauty

In the video “Women’s Ideal Body Types Throughout History,” it shows the ideal body type of women throughout history. It shows that different countries valued different body types. For example, in ancient Italy the women had full heavier set bodies and light skin. While in China petite, tiny waist women were seen as beautiful.

Today, women are obsessed with trying to get the ideal body no matter what the risks are. I think women try their hardest to look like models and famous people. I personally think society harshly judges the way people physically look. Women try their hardest to achieve a goal that might not be good for their body type. I think women should be proud in their skin and not worry about what clothing size they are. As long as you are healthy and eat nutritious food you should not worry about how much you weigh compared to others.

Many women are concerned about the number on the scale rather than if they are at a healthy weight. I think people should worry about their health before the size of their clothing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have studied the connection of weight and life expectance. The studies have shown that there is no connection. In fact the research has shown that “over weight and mildly obese people live longer” (Rutter 2015). This shows that people shouldn’t look down upon people who are high in weight because even if someone looks thicker than the societal norm they might be perfectly healthy.Being skinny and over weight does not mean your healthy, but the food you intake and exercise you do defiantly helps . No matter if you are skinny or over weight , I think the most important thing is your health. This is why people should stop judging people for their physical appearance and start worrying about whats important, your health.

Discovering Delaware

This past weekend I drove two and half hours to see one of my good friends who attends University of Delaware. Aside from the excitement of seeing a friend who has been gone for a month, I was amazed by the campus at University of Delaware. Specifically, I was intrigued by the amount of places there were to eat. Every where you turned there was a different place to get food. Every building had at least one vending machine on each floor, the library had a cafe and restaurant area, another building had Dunkin Donuts and a Mexican take out establishment, the bookstore had snacks and Starbucks and, in addition, there were two dining halls. Food was the focal point of almost every building on the campus. Not only was the campus bombarded with food, but as we proceeded into the town down Main Street, I was astonished as to how many restaurants were on this one street. Looking for a place to eat lunch was such a difficult task with almost fifteen places to choose from in just plain sight.

After seeing the abundance of food choices, I was in awe and began thinking about why there would be so many food places for one college town. Granted, there are thousands of students that attend the University of Delaware but I occurred to me that these college towns, especially food providers, realized the demand of college students, always looking for a quick bite to eat. In the same way, many students may also have fixed incomes, so it is common for students to be frugal with their money. The food providers catered to this as well with food prices and deals that were very reasonable. They also acted on this notion and significantly lowered the prices, to a certain extent, making it easy for college students on a fixed budget to afford eating out at these delicious restaurants on Main Street.

According to The Douglas Steward Company article The Purchasing Power of College Students, the top way students spend their money is on food. Students are more willing to spend their incomes on food than any other product not only for its source of energy and to satisfy their hunger, but for social means. Food providers have become meeting spots and places to host events and gatherings. It is evident to understand why food providers have become a focal point of this college town because of the high demand of consumers, which are the college students, that throw all their income on food.

I also realized that each sign acted as a food cue and even if you just ate, when you walked into every building, food was staring right at you, tempting you to indulge in it. My friend and I laughed at how easy it was to fall into the “Freshman Fifteen”. However, after reading Why The “Freshman 15” Is A Lie, I realized this idea is a myth. Although many college students do tend to gain weight upon entering college until graduation, fifteen pounds is exaggerated. Women tend to gain seven to nine pounds over the four years and men gain about 12 to 13. So for all my fellow college students who are worrying about falling into the “Freshman Fifteen”, be thankful we do not have as many option as Delaware at Wagner, but also be mindful that this idea is a myth.

Real Women Have Curves: Helpful and Harmful

For the most part I really loved Real Women Have Curves, but because of recent discussions I may have a minor problem with this movie. If I had seen this movie a month ago, I would have 100% loved it, but now I’m a little unsure.

The reason for my love of the movie is because of its fantastic message. I think encouraging all women to be comfortable in their skin is an amazing thing. Everyone should feel confident and attractive. We see Ana struggle with this concept for the entire movie. Her mother, a person that should be supporting her, is the one that constantly reminds her of her weight. Her mother is clearly the antagonist and makes Ana feel extremely self-conscious. Ana overcomes this adversary and leaves her verbally abusive mother to pursue a better life in NYC.

This is empowering to more than just those struggling with their weight. It empowers women, minorities, the poor, and anyone that feels they cannot do something to be brave and do what makes them happy. The movie has a truly beautiful message.

However, because of writings by David Callahan (that social pressure should be placed on the overweight to make them feel shamed into losing weight), I have slightly mixed feelings. I completely believe that everyone should be encouraged to be who they want to be, but being overweight isn’t just about self esteem. Being overweight or obese can cause serious health problems. While this movie encourages women to feel beautiful no matter their weight, it may also encourage some to not try to lose weight.

This feeling beautiful while overweight may cause women to think it is not important to try to strive to lose weight for their health. Weight should not important on the societal level as this movie suggests, but it is important regarding individual health. Also, I do not completely agree with Callahan on the shame aspect of his article. Although some people may respond well to tough love, not everyone does. Everyone is different and needs to have their own approach to losing weight. We must cater to the individual, not the masses.
