There cannot be true democracy unless all citizens are able to participate fully in the lives of their country.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal\" align=\"center\">&#8211; Hillary Clinton (1997), Vital Voices Conference in Vienna, Australia<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in;text-indent: -0.25in;line-height: normal;text-align: left\"><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 30px\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 30px\"><strong>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Background:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\">Hillary Diane Clinton was born on October 26, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois.\u00a0 At the age of eighteen, she attended Wellesley College where her involvement in politics first began.\u00a0 As her interest in the political sciences grew in undergrad school, she became insistent on pursuing a law degree.\u00a0 In 1973, she attended Yale Law School, where four years later she was graduating with honors.\u00a0 Immediately after college, she became a staff\u00a0member of the Presidential Impeachment Inquiry where she advised the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives during the\u00a0Watergate\u00a0Scandal.\u00a0 While in law\u00a0school, Hillary had fallen in love with her future husband, Bill Clinton.\u00a0 The two of them moved to Arkansas together where both went on to teach at the University of Arkansas.\u00a0 Bill and Hillary married in 1975.\u00a0 Continuing her passion, Hillary became the first woman to be made a full partner at Rose Law Firm.\u00a0 As a part of the law firm Hillary was appointed to the board for the New World Foundation &#8211; a liberal foundation in support of education, civil rights, and other &#8220;New Left&#8221; causes &#8211; between 1982 and 1988.\u00a0 In 1993, Hillary&#8217;s husband was elected the President of the United States so for the next eight years Hillary served as first lady of the United States.\u00a0 She initiated Health Care Reforms and other policies.\u00a0 After her husband&#8217;s service she followed her own political path and went on the become the U.S. Senator of New York where she served two terms from 2001 to 2009.\u00a0 In 2007 she announced her intentions of running for president for the 2008 presidential election.\u00a0\u00a0 After losing the Democratic nomination to President Barack Obama, she was appointed Secretary of State where she served the position from 2009 to the beginning of 2013.\u00a0 Clinton formally resigned from her post at the beginning of the 2013 year in order to pursue the Democratic nomination\u00a0 for the next presidential election.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/hillary-clinton-9251306\/videos\">Hillary Clinton Biography Video<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><\/strong><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt;line-height: 200%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif';color: #a10737\">Accomplishments:<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_511\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/clinton1.nara.gov\/White_House\/EOP\/First_Lady\/html\/HILLARY_Bio.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-511\" class=\"wp-image-511 \" alt=\"health_care_kids1\" src=\"http:\/\/faculty.wagner.edu\/lori-weintrob\/files\/2013\/11\/health_care_kids1.gif\" width=\"234\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hillary visiting kids who are under her new health insurance program<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Early Accomplishments &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">One of Hillary Clinton\u2019s most noticeable early accomplishments was the creation of Department of Justice&#8217;s Office of Violence Against Women in 1994.\u00a0 She was a major part in creating this Office.\u00a0 The Office on Violence Against Women\u2019s main goals are to reduce violence towards women and to help victims of stalking, domestic violence, sexual assault, and dating violence. \u2013 hence, a perfect fit for joining his cabinet.\u00a0 At first Hillary was reluctant to take on the offer, but later stated that it would present itself to be a \u201cdifficult and exciting new adventure.\u201d\u00a0 By January 21, 2009 she was confirmed in full by the Senate with a 94-2 vote.\u00a0 By this time Clinton\u2019s public approval rating had reached 65 percent \u2013 the highest rating since being First Lady.\u00a0 Soon after, she was sworn into office becoming the first former First Lady to serve on the U.S. Cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Hillary Clinton is classified as being on the list of all time greatest Secretaries of State.\u00a0 During her four years serving on the presidential cabinet, Hillary recorded great popularity among the public and well-documented commitment to the job.\u00a0 Her first critical foreign crisis came during the 2011 Egyptian protests, Hillary became the prime representative of situation since she had previous relations with President Mubarak.\u00a0 She was able\u00a0to influence President Mubarak\u00a0to step down after violent actions\u00a0and protests broke out.\u00a0 Egypt proved to be a challenge for Hillary but she was able to leave a lingering impression of democracy\u00a0in their\u00a0country.\u00a0 They were able to hold\u00a0their first democratic\u00a0election where they elected Mohammed Morsi as President.\u00a0 Throughout her tenure she has recorded breaking numbers by visiting 112 countries and traveled over 957,000 miles within 401 days of tenure.\u00a0 She brought a sense of leadership, engagement, and diplomacy back to American foreign affairs.\u00a0 Through Clinton\u2019s accomplishments and dedication as Secretary of State she is now known as America\u2019s Top Diplomat \u2013 an honorable title fit for her hard work in office.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 1.5em\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Leadership Qualities:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.wagner.edu\/lori-weintrob\/files\/2013\/11\/Hillary-Clinton-int.-women.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-597 alignleft\" alt=\"Hillary Clinton int. women\" src=\"http:\/\/faculty.wagner.edu\/lori-weintrob\/files\/2013\/11\/Hillary-Clinton-int.-women.jpg\" width=\"286\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><strong>VISION &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0As a young woman at Wellesley College and later at Yale, Hillary Clinton was\u00a0always running for positions\u00a0in leadership\u00a0or getting involved in political\u00a0clubs.\u00a0 Ironically, she started college as an active\u00a0Republican and campaigned for Barry Goldwater in 1964.\u00a0 Her switch in party affiliation came in 1968\u00a0when her class was taken\u00a0to attend a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. a resonating and revolutionary Democrat.\u00a0\u00a0She was introduced\u00a0to King after the sermon, later reflecting that her encounter with him\u00a0became\u00a0a defining moment of party conversion for her.\u00a0 After his assassination\u00a0of 1968 took a toll on her she made the full\u00a0switch to a Democrat.\u00a0 By this time she was a senior at Wellesley College with a &#8220;new&#8221; political <strong>vision<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0She was elected\u00a0class president and\u00a0was able to communicate her liberal\u00a0platform of\u00a0women&#8217;s issues and racial equality\u00a0to\u00a0her peers.\u00a0\u00a0Hillary&#8217;s new vision\u00a0remained a Democratic vision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Her Democratic status resonated during her serve as First Lady.\u00a0 She shared\u00a0her vision for\u00a0the concern of social issues by\u00a0supporting the Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program as well as women\u2019s rights through the\u00a0means of\u00a0The Department of Justice\u2019s Office on Violence Against Women.\u00a0\u00a0She\u00a0gave a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clinton3.nara.gov\/WH\/EOP\/First_Lady\/html\/generalspeeches\/1999\/19990304.html\">women\u2019s rights speech March 4<sup>th<\/sup>, 1999<\/a>\u00a0which displayed her true stance\u00a0on\u00a0women liberal\u00a0issues. \u00a0Hillary talks about the issues women faced in the United States as well as other countries and about how she as first lady had seen so many upsetting situations.\u00a0 In this speech, she voices her desire to change these situations and the vision she has of a world where women are equally respected among men.\u00a0\u00a0Through her self reflection and an unexpected\u00a0Democratic influence, Hillary formed a powerful and unwavering\u00a0<strong>vision<\/strong> which\u00a0has been carrying through her political\u00a0journey ever since.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>POLITICAL SKILL<\/strong> &#8211; Within the 21st century, Hillary Clinton has been on a rise on the political spectrum.\u00a0 She has come a long way from being a college student with a mere\u00a0vision.\u00a0 Now she\u00a0holds experience, power, and a purpose for what she stands for and\u00a0has\u00a0demonstrated an\u00a0upward mobility in <strong>political skill<\/strong>.\u00a0 In recent years she has had to overcome obstacles within her political career which in turn has enhanced and strengthened her skills in politics.\u00a0 Being a respected woman in politics has not been an\u00a0easy feat but Hillary has learned the\u00a0tricks and turns around her\u00a0gender\u00a0prejudices.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Within the last five years Hillary has had to learn\u00a0to overcome political obstacles, such as media scrutiny, to redefine\u00a0her skill set.\u00a0\u00a0During the 2008 presidential campaign she lead a competitive campaign all the way to the end.\u00a0 She learned how to react to harsh media and political criticism from the public for being a woman running for president.\u00a0\u00a0Although she took a campaign approach that displayed too strong of an image and ended up failing to claim the Democratic nomination, she accepted and evolved her skills as a result.\u00a0 By the end of her race in 2008, Hillary\u00a0delivered a moving and heartfelt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6qgWH89qWks\">speech in Portsmouth<\/a>, demonstrating the growth she achieved from beginning\u00a0to end of her campaign.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This speech became a defining moment for her as\u00a0she showed a \u00a0\u201cchange in voice\u201d\u00a0&#8211; a more charismatic leader.\u00a0\u00a0Her campaign\u00a0showed great adaption\u00a0in the way that she changed her image in order to appeal to the public, even though it proved to be too late.\u00a0 This presidential running was an example of how Hillary\u00a0showed mastery of\u00a0political skill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DHxPHKM6sPE\">Hillary Clinton&#8217;s 2008 Concession Speech<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; This speech is a culmination of how Hillary evolved by the end of her 2008 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Hillary\u00a0has a new goal in sight.\u00a0 She is aiming for the Democratic nomination of the 2016 presidential election.\u00a0\u00a0With\u00a0critical reflection and the growth that has carried over from her last run she\u00a0is bringing\u00a0a new skill set\u00a0and strategies for\u00a0this next campaign.\u00a0 She demonstrates\u00a0a leader who\u00a0understands political skill and how to\u00a0evolve and\u00a0implement its full potential<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DHxPHKM6sPE\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u2666 An empowering woman with a purpose and political means.\u00a0 A leader who displays clear vision and understanding of politics. \u2666<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #f3f3f3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/home\/us\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 10px solid black\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/faculty.wagner.edu\/lori-weintrob\/files\/2013\/11\/Hillary-Rodham-Clinton-1024x732.jpeg\" width=\"386\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<dl class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 396px\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">&#8220;Whether I am meant to or not, I challenge assumptions about women. I do make some people uncomfortable, which I\u2019m well aware of, but that\u2019s just part of coming to grips with what I believe is still one of the most important pieces of unfinished business in human history \u2014 empowering women to be able to stand up for themselves.&#8221;<\/dd>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">&#8211; Hillary Clinton<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: .5in;line-height: 200%\">\u00a0<b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt;line-height: 200%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif';color: #a10737\">Criticism:<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Criticism<\/strong> &#8211; During Hillary&#8217;s post college years she was criticized for not being faithful to the Democratic party.\u00a0 Ironically, she was raised in a politically conservative household.\u00a0 She came from a long line of Republicans and evidently followed suit.\u00a0 Her first year at Wellesley College she was the president of the Young Republicans Club.\u00a0\u00a0 However, her party affiliation began to change during her last two years in undergrad College when her views on the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King became more open and liberal.\u00a0 By the end of the 60&#8217;s Hillary had made her full party conversion to a Democrat.\u00a0 Due to her switch in party sides she has been accused of party confusion and muddled policy identity.\u00a0 It took quite a few years before Hillary was seen as a &#8220;true&#8221; member of the Democratic party.\u00a0 She directly immersed herself in social activism, liberal foundations, Democratic conventions, and associated herself with Democratic party members in order to establish her new political faith.<\/p>\n<p>In later years, after she had already served as first lady for seven years, she was criticized for being weak when she stayed with her husband, Bill, after the Monica Lewinsky scandal. \u00a0 1998, Bill Clinton was accused of having an affair with an intern by the name of Monica Lewinsky.\u00a0\u00a0 During the accusation, Hillary was Bill\u2019s strongest supporters.\u00a0 Although Bill later admitted to the affair, Hillary stayed with him and committed herself to her own political career as well as Bill\u2019s.\u00a0 Many people criticized Hillary for not leaving Bill after the affair, but Hillary was committed to making it work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Later Criticism &#8211; <\/strong>Hillary&#8217;s<span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;line-height: 107%\">\u00a02008 presidential election gave one of the first politically viable campaign studies for a woman in the running for president.
