The tale of Adirondac, the famous \u201cDeserted Village\u201d in Essex County\u2019s Newcomb township, stands at the center of the saga of the exploration of New York State\u2019s Adirondack High Peaks region. Starting with the discovery of its massive iron ore deposit in 1826, Adirondac drew industrialists, scientists, journalists and adventurers to the area. Some came to see the remarkable iron-processing plantation, established in the middle of the Adirondack forest, miles from nowhere; others used the settlement as a base for their exploration of Indian Pass, Lakes Colden and Avalanche, and Mount Marcy, whose summit was found to be the highest point in the Empire State. After the iron mine shut down in 1858, visitors continued to visit the abandoned site, which came to be known as the \u201cDeserted Village.\u201d This anthology includes all the 19th century accounts of visitors to Adirondac, starting with the letter penned by its discoverer, David Henderson, and ending \u2014 appropriately \u2014 with a ghost story.
