This volume, published in\u00a02015 as part of\u00a0Ashgate’s “Late Eighteenth-Century Composers” series, gathers together important writings on all aspects of the life and music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714\u20131788). The second son of the more famous Johann Sebastian Bach, C.P.E. Bach was an important figure in his own right, writing roughly\u00a0one thousand compositions in virtually all the\u00a0major\u00a0eighteenth-century genres save for opera.\u00a0Working first in Berlin and later in Hamburg, he was also known as a performer on keyboard instruments, and his two-volume\u00a0Essay<\/em> on that subject (known in German as the\u00a0Versuch<\/em>) remains a valuable source of information on eighteenth-century performance practice.<\/p>\n

My introduction to the volume can\u00a0serve as a guide\u00a0to published scholarship on C. P. E. Bach. The introduction, together with a bibliography and a list of\u00a0the 24 selections included in the volume, can be viewed here<\/a>. Each selection\u00a0comprises previously published material; some items\u00a0are\u00a0articles also\u00a0available in online databases, but most are\u00a0taken\u00a0from hard-to-find sources\u00a0that are not available electronically. The book falls\u00a0into four\u00a0parts titled (1)\u00a0The composer and his works; (2)\u00a0Individual compositions and their sources; (3)\u00a0The Versuch<\/em> and other writings; and (4)\u00a0Performance and reception.\u00a0Among the authors represented are\u00a0Thomas Christensen,\u00a0Christopher Hogwood, Mary Oleskiewicz,\u00a0Annette Richards,\u00a0Mikl\u00f3s Sp\u00e1nyi,\u00a0Christoph Wolff, and\u00a0Peter Wollny.<\/p>\n

The great majority of the material is in English. Newly published in this volume is the editor’s translation of an important early twentieth-century essay by Arnold Schering, as well as the editor’s overview of writings on\u00a0C.P.E. Bach, which serves as introduction to the volume. An English version of an important article by Darrell M. Berg, originally published in\u00a0German and reprinted here as “Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs Umarbeitungen seiner Claviersonaten,” could not be accommodated within the new volume and therefore appears online here<\/a>.
