Unintentional Eating and Food Cues

Food cues can either be a good thing or a dangerous thing in reference to our eating habits, but as long as we are able to identify the negative cues, it is easier for us to substitute it with positive cues. Some cues include seeing/smelling food, specific food labels, time of day, seeing a person we usually eat meals with, and being in places related to food. After discussing in class what a food cue was, I realized how these cues influence my daily life, without even thinking about it.

First of all, a very common food cue for not only myself I’m sure, is the time of day you eat. On Mondays and Wednesdays right after my 11:10 class and Tuesdays and Thursdays after my 12:50 class  it is a must to stop in the cafeteria for lunch. On some days I am not even hungry but because of this food cue, my body tells me the second class is over it is time for lunch. It is amazing how our bodies are programmed to signal that it is time to eat. Moreover, whenever I see the usual people I eat meals with here in college, my body alerts me to make my way over to the cafeteria. Lastly, a very common food cue for me is that of being in places related to food. Sometimes a friend will ask me to sit with them in Hawks Nest just so they don’t have to be alone and even though I am not hungry I start to munch on some of their food and even proceed to buy my own meal.

These are all common food cues that each one of us experience every day. Due to the fact that we are now in college and we do not have our parents putting dinner on the table for us and told to eat at a certain time, we often eat because we are bored and in times when we are not even hungry. All of these food cues are caused by Pavlovian Association because we become conditioned to these food cues.

San Gennaro

IMG_0220

Two weekends ago I visited the San-Gennaro feast in Little Italy, New York. This experience made me see a whole different culture by just walking through a street in the city. The feast is originally from Naples, Italy and was brought here by the immigrants in the 1920s. This tradition has stayed with the city ever since and is held every year and will continue to be celebrated for many more. Those immigrants had made a tradition that has stuck for almost a hundred years and that is a powerful thing to me. Tradition is the key to every culture and is the key to keeping the culture alive.

Walking through the feast with all the food stands lined up and all the restaurants packed made me hungry beyond belief. The aromas that came from the restaurants filled the air and may have been what attracted the thousands of people that attended. Once i sat down and took that first bite of my pollo de marsala i could not be happier. Next to the chicken came fried mash potatoes which i will never forget the taste of. This dish is a nineteenth century Italian American dish that is famous in the United States. I recommend that all attend the San Gennaro feast if possible!

Article On Spices

I found this article while browsing the internet and thought I would share with the group. Since we’ve been talking about the importance of spices and their impact on European society, I found it to be extremely relevant. It addresses the turning point that occurred with the popularity of spices within high society. Why did they suddenly lose interest in the the very culinary accessories which had made their cuisine so elite in the past? Did they simply not like them anymore? It discusses how the colonization of India and the Americas supplied an abundance of spices and how that lead to a decline in popularity. I found it interesting because the article is saying that something so influential at the time was slowly washed away by the inclusion of the lower classes. This is a testament to the influence societal trends have within the world of food, and consequently, history. I hope you enjoy it as I did.

A World Without Sunday Dinner

We really don’t think about how many things we take for granted in this world nowadays, especially food. After watching “A Place at the Table” it really opened up a new light for me in terms of food deserts across the country. For instance, when you think about Sunday dinner it doesn’t seem as a big deal to you. You value food as an every day privilege as expected three times a day; however, imagine your life consisting of consuming three bags of potato chips a day and that being the source of your daily nutrition. The problem across the country today is that many people are ashamed of acknowledging this problem, along with our government. They constantly talk about trying to resolve this problem but never really seem to make such difference.

As stated in the documentary, across the country today, one of out every six Americans say that they don’t have enough to eat. Along with this issue many families are food insecure, which means that they don’t know when their next meal is coming. Can you envision waking up everyday hoping and praying that you will be able to put some sort of food on the table for your children? This is an underlying problem especially in Mississippi. When I first heard that this state holds the highest obesity rate as well as well as has the highest food insecurity in America I was surprised. I thought to myself how could that be? I soon learned that this is occurring because a lot of residents in Mississippi don’t make enough money to buy healthy foods, therefore they have to resort to junk food such as donuts and chips. The price of healthy foods has gone up about 40% since 1980, which is why it’s so hard to acquire nowadays especially for people who receive a small salary. Throughout the years, while the price of healthy foods boosted up, the price of processed foods shot down about 40%. One of the primary reasons for this and the growing rate of obesity is the farm policy that we run by – which indicates what we subsidize and what we don’t subsidize. All of the natural and healthy options that are laid out in the supermarkets are all subsidized while the junk food that’s now sold at almost every deli, gas station, and supermarket is unsubsidized. The 23.5 million Americans that live in food deserts nowadays just eat what’s available to them, which is ultimately not much. Since these low-income families have to resort to eating junk food due to the unavailability and high costs of healthy food, obesity continues to grow. The government has set up a food stamp policy across the nation that is based on your total income. Even though food stamps may help a family for the first week or two of the month, they cant be the consistent source of food that’s needed for a family of at least 4. A very large issue with food stamps that a woman experienced in the movie was that as soon as she started to make some money that was above the maximum salary needed to receive food stamps, she could barely put any food on the table for her kids. The problem is, is that it’s a lose-lose situation nowadays. Either you don’t have a high paying job and receive food stamps that put some sort of food on the table, or you get a job that no longer qualifies you for food stamps which poses an even bigger struggle when acquiring food. I believe that one of possible solutions that should be more addressed would be to lower the cost of these healthy and nutritional options rather than just implementing supermarkets in these food deserts. Just because the healthy and nutritional options all of a sudden become available doesn’t mean that these residents can purchase them or are willing to change their eating habits. The government should start more programs that will provide and distribute free healthy food options to those in need. After watching this movie I became much more intrigued with the subject and hope to learn more about it throughout the semester.

Beans and leaves

For those of you who do not live on staten island there are many different places around her to get a delicious breakfast. My favorite place, Beans and Leaves, just opened up this year. It is located on Forest Avenue, about 6 minutes away from Wagner. It is a little shop with about 10 or so tables. Sometimes there might be a bit of a wait but it is definitely worth it. If you are someone who enjoys waffles, this is the place to go. Here they have variety of different breakfast waffles that you can make yourself. You can add your own assorted fruit like, bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. To make your waffle ever more delicious you can add chocolate( dark or milk), peanut butter ,caramel, Nutella, powered sugar or their home made whipped cream. My personal favorite would have to be the s’mores waffle. This is a waffle with dark chocolate, crushed gram crackers and melted marshmallow on top. It out of this world! A waffle with bananas and whipped cream and a waffle with Nutella and strawberries are also customer favorites. b and l 2smores b and l 1

Everyone needs a coffee to get them going in the morning. At beans and leaves you can try things you may have never even thought existed. They have your regular coffee, frappuccino, cappuccinos, lattes  and smoothies but also a variety of different drinks you may have never tasted. Some of these include but are not limited to cake batter, s’mores, pumpkin spice, Cinnabon, Vanilla hazelnut, white chocolate almond, sugar cookie, Jamaican me crazy, coffee cake and amaretto. Unlike usual breakfast places, at Beans and Leaves you order before you sit. There is also no menu, so your food choice is whatever you’re feeling when you go up to order. From my experience being there, I see that everyone always has a full plate with an assortment of toppings. Seeing this, it makes me realize that it is okay for me to eat as much as I want without people looking at me.

This correlates to what we are learning in class about how others determine how much they are going to eat depending on the people they are with and the people around them. When I see my friend eating more on her waffle , I tend to eat more. Sometimes when I hear someone order something I remember that I want that too so I get more on my waffle. The atmosphere of the cafe cues a person to eat more because there are so many delicious options that its hard to resist. There is also a visual aspect to it, seeing only a waffle on my plate (a small portion) it makes me want to fill it up with all the different toppings. This makes me eat more than I expected. After I eat, I am so full I can go until dinner time without eating.

Just a fact, their busiest days are usually Saturday and Sunday mornings so if you go prepare for a line!
